<p>Here&#8217;s  another beauty tip for ya. We&#8217;re in the dead of winter, and your skin  might be painfully dry. Eating good fats (think avocado, nut butters,  coconut oil, olive oil) will actually help moisturize your skin.</p>
<p><strong>Tip: Add in some healthy fats to your diet this week. Also, try using coconut oil topically to soothe dry skin.</strong></p>

<p>I don&#8217;t know about you, but when it gets cold outside, sometimes I <em>really</em> don&#8217;t like to get out of bed when my alarm clock chirps.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve also found that when I hit the snooze button too many times in the morning, I have trouble falling asleep that night.</p>
<p><strong>Tip:  Before  going to bed, set the intention of saying &#8220;Yes&#8221; to your alarm  clock. If  you wake up saying &#8220;yes&#8221; instead of &#8220;no,&#8221; you&#8217;ll wake up on  time,  you&#8217;ll feel better, and it&#8217;ll set a great tone for your entire  day.</strong></p>

<p>Happy New  Year! How was your holiday season? Mine was exciting, restful, and joyful but also stressful, turbulent, and personally challenging.</p>
<p>After the stress  and busyness of the holidays, it&#8217;s easy to end up in a wintertime  slump. Instead, I invite you to use the momentum of the new year to  start making small, incremental changes to support your health in the  coming year.</p>
<p><strong><span style="font-family:georgia;color:#cc0000;font-size:medium;">Featured Article: New Year, New You</span></strong></p>
<p>A  lot of people begin the new year by making resolutions. We&#8217;ve all been  there. We take a vow to lose weight, exercise more, or spend more time  with our family. We start the year with great intentions, but then we  quickly relapse into old habits. Why is it so hard to stick to those New  Year&#8217;s resolutions?</p>
<p>Here are some ways you <img src="https://origin.ih.constantcontact.com/fs060/1103441312528/img/46.jpg" border="0" alt="New Year Plant" hspace="5" vspace="5" width="199.75" height="199.75" align="right" />can make your intentions a reality this year:</p>
<p>1. <strong>Write down your intentions and keep them in a visible place, </strong>like taped to your bathroom mirror or the dashboard of your car.</p>
<p>2. <strong>Get to the source of whatever is keeping you in a rut. </strong>Are  you in a stressful relationship that causes you to eat a pint of Ben  &amp; Jerry&#8217;s every night? Are you stressed at your job and feel too  tired to exercise after work? If you don&#8217;t tackle the root of the  behavior, it will be much harder to accomplish your goal.</p>
<p>3. <strong>Be clear about what your life would look like once you achieve your goal. </strong>If  you resolve to go to the gym more, how will this benefit you? Get  connected to the result of your action, and you will be more likely to  stick with your plan.</p>
<p>4. <strong>Share you resolutions with friends and family. </strong>Hold  each other accountable for achieving your goals. If you want to go to  the gym more, have a friend call you two or three times a week to check  on you, or invite them to join you.</p>
<p>5. <strong>Reward yourself with every little accomplishment. </strong>If your intention is to lose weight and you lose one pound a week, pamper yourself with a massage!</p>
<p>Big  changes do not require big leaps. Permanent change is more likely to  happen gradually than through one big restrictive plan. Allow yourself  to climb the ladder one rung at at time.</p>
<p><strong><span style="font-family:georgia;color:#cc0000;font-size:medium;">Food Focus: Sea Vegetables</span></strong></p>

<p>In traditional Chinese healing, sea vegetables correspond to the winter season and to the kidneys, adrenal glands, bladder, andreproductive organs. The strengthening, balancing, and cleansing properties of sea vegetables are known to help these organs as well as the hair, skin, and nails. Sea vegetables (or seaweeds) provide a variety of minerals and vitamins, including calcium, iron, and iodine and can help balance hormone and thyroid levels in the body. Eating too many processed foods or foods grown in mineral-depleted soil can result in a lack of minerals in the body, leading to cravings for salty or sugary foods. Adding sea vegetables to your diet can help balance your energy levels and alleviate cravings.</p>
<p><strong><span style="font-family:georgia;color:#cc0000;font-size:medium;">Recipe of the Month: Mighty Miso Soup</span></strong></p>
<p><em>Prep time: 5-10 minutes<br />
</em></p>
<p><em><em>Cooking time: 10-15 minutes<br />
</em></em></p>
<p><em><em>Yield: 4-5 servings</em></em></p>
<p><em> </em></p>
<p><strong> </strong><strong>Ingredients</strong>:</p>
<ul>
<li>4-5 cups filtered water</li>
<li>1-2 inch strip of wakame seaweed, rinsed and soaked 5 minutes</li>
<li>1-2 cups thinly sliced veggies of your choice (see notes)</li>
<li>2-3 teaspoons barley miso</li>
<li>2 scallions, finely chopped</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Directions:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Chop the soaked wakame.</li>
<li>Discard the soaking water or use on houseplants for a boost of minerals.<img src="https://origin.ih.constantcontact.com/fs060/1103441312528/img/48.png" border="0" alt="Miso Soup" hspace="5" vspace="5" width="248" height="203" align="right" /></li>
<li>Place water and wakame in a soup pot and bring to a boil.</li>
<li>Add root vegetables first and simmer gently for 5 minutes or until tender.</li>
<li>Add leafy vegetables and simmer for 2-3 minutes.</li>
<li>Remove about 1/2 cup of liquid from pot and dissolve miso into it. Return it to the pot.</li>
<li>Reduce heat to very low; do not boil or simmer miso broth.</li>
<li>Allow soup to cook 2-3 minutes.</li>
<li>Garnish with scallions and serve.</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>Note:</strong></p>
<p>Any combination of vegetables can be used in miso soup. Here are some classic combinations:</p>
<ul>
<li>onion-daikon: cleansing</li>
<li>onion-carrot-shiitake mushroom-kale: mildly sweet</li>
<li>onion-winter squash-cabbage: great in winter</li>
<li>leek-corn-broccoli: great in summer<strong> </strong></li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Variations:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Add cooked grains at the start of making the soup. They will become nice and soft.</li>
<li>Add a tablespoon of uncooked quinoa or millet at the beginning and let it cook with vegetables for 20 minutes.</li>
<li>Add bean sprouts toward the end.</li>
<li>Season with 1/2 teaspoon ginger juice for a twist.</li>
<li>If using dry shiitake mushrooms, let them soak for 20 minutes, slice, and add at the beginning.</li>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When a friend of mine told me there was a group of people swapping homemade food in Brooklyn, I couldn&#8217;t wait to check it out. The people were interesting and friendly, the food everyone brought for the potluck was great, and I swapped my raw macaroons for some seriously yummy stuff! I was a little anxious that there wouldn&#8217;t be much for me to swap for (mostly raw, gluten-free, don&#8217;t eat soy, sugar, or dairy&#8230;) but I had nothing to worry about! There were plenty of goodies for people of all dietary persuasions.</p>
<p>The event was <a title="BK Swappers" href="http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/BK-Swappers-A-Brooklyn-based-Food-Swap-Event/158976194142177?v=info" target="_blank">BK Swappers</a>, hosted by three awesome women: Meg Paska of <a title="Brooklyn Homesteader" href="http://brooklynhomesteader.com" target="_blank">Brooklyn Homesteader</a>, Kate Payne of <a title="Hip Girl's Guide to Homemaking" href="http://hipgirlshome.com/" target="_blank"> Hip Girl&#8217;s Guide to Homemaking</a>, and food writer <a title="Jane Lerner" href="http://butterandsalt.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Jane Lerner</a>. After mingling and munching for about an hour, the swapping began. I made out with a chai spiced tea kit, pecan cranberry pate, and vanilla extract from <a title="Goddamn Cobras" href="http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=170035119702951&amp;set=a.158994544140342.31279.158976194142177&amp;pid=334368&amp;id=158976194142177#!/pages/Goddamn-Cobras/122858321793" target="_blank">Goddamn Cobras</a>, gluten-free/sugar-free pumpkin cake from <a title="Britt of In Arms" href="http://www.inarmscoaching.com/" target="_blank">Britt of In Arms</a>, yummy kombucha from <a title="Mombucha" href="http://mombucha.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Mombucha</a>, delicious quick pickled veggies from <a title="@BronaCos," href="http://twitter.com/#!/bronacos" target="_blank">@BronaCos,</a> and more macaroons from <a title="Bird's Eye Maples" href="http://birdseyemaples.com/" target="_blank">Bird&#8217;s Eye Maples</a>! It was fantastic meeting like-minded foodies, and leaving with a bag of goodies I could never have made myself was especially satisfying.</p>
<p>My kale chips were a big hit at the potluck, so I&#8217;ll share the recipe here. Enjoy!</p>
<p><strong>Tasty Raw Kale Chips</strong><a href="http://hilaryvreeland.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/img_1136.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-519" title="Raw Kale Chips" src="http://hilaryvreeland.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/img_1136.jpg?w=300&#038;h=300" alt="" width="300" height="300" /></a></p>
<p>Dark, leafy greens help purify your blood, prevent cancer, strengthen your immune system, and improve circulation. Kale chips are an easy, delicious way to get more greens in your diet. And since they’re raw, their nutrients and digestive enzymes stay intact. These are a hit with kids and adults alike, and they’re a fantastic, easy snack to have on-hand. They’re so delicious that this is my most requested recipe!</p>
<p>Ingredients:</p>
<p>-       2 cups cashews</p>
<p>-       ½ red bell pepper</p>
<p>-       ½ cup nutritional yeast<em> </em></p>
<p>-       3 tablespoons fresh lime juice<em></em></p>
<p>-       3 pinches Celtic sea salt<em></em></p>
<p>-       1 ½ cups water<em></em></p>
<p>-       2 large bunches kale <em></em></p>
<p>Optional add-ins:</p>
<p>-       1-2 tablespoons red chili flakes</p>
<p>-       1-2 tablespoons curry<em> </em>powder</p>
<p>Equipment:</p>
<p>-       high-speed blender</p>
<p>-       dehydrator (this recipe fills a 9-tray dehyrator)<em></em></p>
<p>Cover the cashews in water and let soak for at least one hour, and up to eight hours. Discard the soaking water and rinse the cashews.</p>
<p>Rip up the kale, discarding the stems, and rinse. Blend all ingredients except the kale in a high-speed blender, like a Vitamix. In a large mixing bowl, pour the mixture over the kale. Massage through the leaves, making sure each leaf is well covered. Spread out kale on dehydrator trays and place trays in every other slot in the dehydrator. Bake at 115° overnight, or approximately 12 hours. These will keep for a few weeks in drier climates and less time in more humid climates. Super easy!</p>

<p>Your body only wants you to eat food when you&#8217;re hungry. So here&#8217;s a little tip to help you stay true to your body. Plus it&#8217;s really good for your teeth =)</p>
<p><strong>Tip: Brush  your teeth after meals. It gets rid of any leftover tastes from your  meal that might trigger you into thinking you want more.</strong></p>
